The making of Shelter
For the show Tempest at the Hinterland Art Space in Denver (2014), I wanted to help the viewer experience the transition from installation to photograph of an installation by juxtaposing them within the same space.
One corner of the gallery space became the ideal set for the demonstration: bisecting the front wall, was a black cast iron stove. I used black string to encase the stove and merge it into an amalgam of objects and materials that I attached to a section of a nearby wall. I then adjusted the gallery lights and set up a camera to capture the instillation.
Before opening day, I had a print of a photograph of the installation made. I displayed the print alongside the instillation.
Shelter was made using a card-table, plaster wrap, paint, molding, wax castings, molds, dried latex paint, a mirror and some string.
